The Gift of Self-Care

The holiday season can be an exciting and joyous time. For some people, it can also be a difficult time of the year. Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) families often face additional complications that may make the holiday season especially overwhelming, stressful and/or lonely. The military member may be deployed or this might be the first holiday season away from extended family. During the holiday season, remember to take care of yourself.
Here are some self-care tips for the holiday season:
Give yourself permission
Half of the battle with self-care is to let go of the guilt. It is okay to put your needs first, even if it is the season of giving. Giving yourself the gift of self-care helps you to be better able to give to those around you.
Create your own new traditions
Take some time to think about what makes the holiday season special for you. What traditions are important to you? Are there any new traditions that you would like to try? Especially if you are at a new base, there may be some local traditions/events. Since the holidays often get busy, be selective of what events you want to attend. Let go of obligations and remember that it is okay to say no.
Time Management
Don’t get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Use your time management strategies to plan ahead and designate specific time frames for your tasks and/or the functions that you wish to attend. Using these time management strategies may help you to feel less overwhelmed. This holiday season create a sense of peace and joy for yourself.
Make your health a priority
Eating healthy can help your energy levels. So can exercise and a consistently good sleep. Take care of your body, so that you have the energy to do everything that you want to accomplish.
Practice Gratitude
The holiday season is a good time to focus on what you are grateful for in your life. Shift your attention to what you have, rather than getting swept up in what you are missing. Some people find it useful to journal or make a daily list of what they feel grateful for. If you are finding it especially difficult this holiday season, try volunteering in a community kitchen that is serving a holiday meal. Giving to others can help you to feel good during the holiday season.
